MAINTENANCE / MODS
Exhaust:
My factory stock exhaust system developed a leak where the
passenger side tailpipe meets the muffler and the mufflers were
getting pretty rusted. I checked into factory replacement, but
everything was discontinued. I wanted something quiet like
the factory system. I talked with another owner that had this
system and he was very pleased with it. I installed it and yes it
is a very well built system.

Hoses:
With 123,000 miles on it, I thought it was time to replace the
factory hoses. I chose the Hi-Miler set made by Goodyear.

Shocks:
I prefer a nice controlled ride, but not firm. I
wanted the Bilstein:
B46-1516-HO (FRONT)
B46-1517-HO (REAR)
These are great shocks with good ride
characteristics, but somewhat pricey. I
decided to go a cheaper route and chose the
Monroe Matic-Plus shocks that are valved
specifically for the Impala SS. I am very
pleased with the ride, handling and price:

Rear Body Brace:
I odered from my local Chevrolet Dealer the Buick Roadmaster
Rear Frame support brace. This brace did not come on the
Caprice or Impala SS from the factory. The brace bolts across
the back where the left and right rear bumper absorbers attach
to the frame. This adds stiffness to the frame and eliminates
some body wallowing.

Body Bushings:
I odered from my local Chevrolet Dealer the body bushings
needed to perform what has been termed the "Mueller Mod".
This was researched by Scott Mueller a fellow B-Body owner. I
waited a long time before performing this modification,
because I thought it wouldn't really be that noticable. I was
very wrong. This made the car feel very tight and removed
almost all of the body wallowing. It also got rid of the body
creek when making a slow full lock turn. Highly recommended.

Mechanical Fan Clutch:
My Caprice came from the factory with the trailering package
(V92) which came with a heavy duty mechanical fan clutch.
This fan setup causes quite a roar when taking off from a dead
stop and somewhat annoying. I know most people remove the
mechanical fan and switch to the dual electric fan setup that
the Impala SS came with, however most of the parts for the
Impala SS dual electric fan setup are discontinued. I chose to
install the lighter duty silicone filled mechanical fan clutch. I
learned of this part through fellow Caprice SS owner. This
totally eliminated the fan roar and did not affect cooling at all.
