In 1994 when Chevrolet went into production on the Impala SS, I read several reviews in various magazines and browsed many pictures, I thought to myself, WOW !! how did they make a plain old Caprice look so good. I never did get to see one in person that year. Later in 1995 I was browsing my local Chevrolet dealership and just outside the showroom there sat a 1995 DGGM, I was amazed at how well it looked for such a big car. When you look at the Caprice you don't think sporty, but Chevrolet did a really nice job of making the Impala SS a sporty looking sedan. GM built in good performance and handling and the coolest thing of all is you can take your family with you, how many sports cars have that option? The Impala SS was only available in three colors. Black (BBB) was the only available color on the original 1994 model, however 2 additional colors were added for 1995-1996. Dark Cherry Metallic (DCM) and Dark Green Grey Metallic (DGGM).

I have never really been in the position to spend money on a nice Impala SS, so I decided the next best thing was to find a good used 1996 Caprice Classic with the LT1 engine and preferably in one of the three colors that the original Impala SS/Caprice SS was offered in. Black, Dark Cherry Metallic or Dark Green Grey Metallic. After about 3 years of looking off and on, I finally found the perfect car to start my transformation to the look of an Impala SS / Caprice SS, basically I wanted to build a clone. My 1996 Caprice Classic was a one owner car that was purchased new in Billings, MT. I purchase the car from the original owners son who lives in Ft. Collins, CO. The car had 125,530 miles on it. I was really looking for something of lower mileage, however I always heard how bullet proof the LT1 engine is if taken care of. The car ran like a dream and the exterior of the car was in good condition with no rust. The interior is almost mint condition, with the exception of the leather seats being very dry and needing some conditioning. The paint was in good condition, however it had many, many surface scratches from many years of car washes, snow removal and just paint finish neglect. The car has every available option when ordering a Caprice Classic in 1996. It has the very desirable (B4U) Sport Performance Package. If you click on the "My Conversion Process" link to the left, you will see pictures of how the car looked originally and pictures along the way of reaching my end result.
